Tom and Barbara were nearly ready to put the finishing touches on their plans of self reliance. Until now, they had put together a garden, which gave them food and a source of extra income. They had set up three sources of power from solar energy, a wind generator and a hydropower generator. This gave them a source for hot water as well as a way to power all of their appliances and lights throughout their property. They were able to get goats and bees, both of which gave them additional food sources as well as more income. They had even lessened their reliance on city water works a great deal.

Solar panels are rated from 1 watt to 300+ watts. Most solar panels up to 135 watts are 12 volts direct current (12vdc). Most solar panels over 135 watts are 21 to 40 vdc.

In the true sense, solar power if developed well can supply the whole world. On the first place, sun is a free source of energy compared to hydropower plants owned by several companies wherein you need to pay monthly. Otherwise, they will cut the supply of your home’s power. But what’s great about solar power is that, it promotes green environment. There no need to burn fossil fuels just to produce electricity.

The real number you are interested in is the watts per dollar you are paying. By building your own solar panels you can get the price per panel down to $200 – 300. You don’t need to be technically inclined and the information packages now available are brilliant.

In order to do more than just barely survive, first we have to simplify our lives. We must learn to need and want less. We can learn to get our enjoyment and entertainment from lower cost or free sustainable sources. We live in a time of unbelievable over consumption of all kinds of goods, including expensive food from all over the world. We will need to rely on local products and local food sources. Part of the change that will be coming has to do with the transportation of goods across the world. We will see that slow way down and goods from far away will be extremely expensive. At least until new energy company sources are implemented that change the cost and environmental damage from worldwide transportation of goods.

Try drying your laundry outside in the sun whenever possible, rather than using a dryer. The smell of clothes dried in the fresh air cannot be topped. They will feel and smell fresher than machine-dried clothes. You will also save money on utility bills by doing this.

People and businesses taking advantage of this technology today are the people and businesses of the future. But solar power is here now, and it is here to stay.
