The “check engine” or “service engine soon” light has come on. Don’t panic. It does not mean the engine is about to fall apart or explode. In fact, you may find no difference at all in driving or engine performance, except for the persistent distraction of that light on your dashboard.

Explain to your local Honda representative your dilemma. If you are still within the boundaries of your warranty, use it. If they have special deals going, avail them. This can save catalytic converter recycling you money.

Nextly, exhaust gases exit from your manifold or header, travel through a bit of pipe, then end up in the catalytic converter, or “cat”. The cat’s main job is to help clean up some of the harmful chemicals from your exhaust gas so they don’t end up in your lungs.

As the exhaust flows over these sensors, they send voltage to the computer. If the oxygen content is high, then the voltage drops. The computer ‘knows’ that the mixture is lean, so it sends more gas to the engine. If the oxygen content is low, the voltage rises and that means the mixture is too rich. The computer will cut back on fuel flow to correct the problem.

Watch out for scams and tricks that low-end tow guys will try to pull on you. One of the tricks is that they will agree on a price with you on the phone, and then the story will change once they show up to get it. Before they rig it up, they will come and tell you that it the car is missing its scrap O2 sensor recycling. Then they will proceed to offer you $100 dollars less than what you agreed on. The catalytic converter is located underneath the car, and the tow guy knows that most people don’t even know what that is. Even if you did know what it is, chances are that you wont get underneath the nasty car to look for yourself. Most people just would rather save the hassle, so they just agree to take the lower price. Watch out for this trick because it works!

The more aggressively you drive, the sooner you’ll need to have your brakes repaired. Most brake jobs focus solely on the pads. The pads wear down and need to be replaced before they begin grinding against the rotors. When that happens, you’ll need to have the rotors machined.
